The Michigan Business Review brings news this week of two new clothing stores. Unlike Poshh., neither will be bringing its own punctuation. American Apparel seems to be the equivalent of fair-trade clothing, the website boasts that it is made in downtown L.A., is sweatshop free, and is brand free. This is starting to sound like the Emperor's New Clothes.
As for Cool Waves, it is a local-to-Michigan chain started in Traverse City and its claim to fame is that it'll only stock "6 to 12" of any given item. If I had septuplets, I'd definitely shop there and dress them all alike.

There's some talk (rumors on the internets, as it were) that American Apparel is union-busting.
One step at a time... So right now it's one way or the other: You can have clothes made by a 9 year old working 16 hour days, or you can have clothes made by one of 1200 employees in LA who thinks they pay too much for healthcare and doesn't get paid vacations. Being one of the millions of Americans who doesn't have healthcare/vacation pay I have no sympathy at all, and a dozen sweatshop-free™ items in my closet...

I was happy to shop at Cool Waves, a small, locally-owned shop with some cool looking clothes. However, their customer service leaves much to be desired! I bought a dress and later discovered that two of the seams had never been sewn. It wasn't obvious, since it was a two-layer crinkle dress. When I tried to return it 2 weeks later (unworn, tags still on & with receipt), I got a "I'm a fashion major and you don't know shit" attitude and absolutely no sympathy - no refund, discount, or store credit. Buyer beware!!

Wow! The girl who left a comment about the customer service at that awesome new store Cool Waves must have gone into the store with some kind of horrible attitude herself because my experience there was nothing short of amazing. I have never seen so many unique outfits in my life! The pair of jeans I bought there are still my favorite thing in my closet and the sales associate that showed me them is one of the most interesting and fun people I have encountered at U of M. Get an opinion for yourself, don't trust a girl who probably ripped the dress after a few too many visits to McDonalds.
